Tree Surveys- BS5837
BS5837 is a British Standard that local planning authorities use to assess the impact on trees during the construction phase of development. A BS5837 tree survey is required before development and addresses the issues of tree retention in the context of a proposed development. The survey records all relevant trees and their attributes so that a development plan can be designed showing the retention of higher quality trees where appropriate. -
Arboricultural Impact Assessment (AIA)
An Arboricultural Impact Assessment (AIA) is a written assessment that determines the site-specific effect of planned development on the existing tree stock. It is recommended by the British Standard 5837: 2012. The AIA identifies trees to be removed and those to be retained and highlights potential conflicts between retained trees and the planned development. Conflicts can range from crown shading issues of a tree to a planned development breaching a tree’s Root Protection Area (RPA). Additionally, an AIA considers the impact of statutory designations such as tree preservation orders (TPOs) and identifies the long-term value and benefits of trees in the urban and built environment. -
Tree Protection Plans
A tree protection plan is a document that outlines the steps that will be taken to protect trees during a development or construction project. It designates the valuable trees that must be protected during the construction process and ensures that they are given the proper care and attention they need to thrive. The plan should be written before the ground is broken and should include a team of site managers as well as professionals who can provide tree protection advice. By working together, the team can identify potential conflicts between construction needs and tree protection, and identify compromise solutions. -
Arboricultural Method Statement
An Arboricultural Method Statement (AMS) is a methodology for dealing with the implementation of any aspect of development that has the potential to result in the loss of, or damage to, trees. It describes the measures to be implemented in order to ensure that adequate tree protection is put in place during the construction process. Typically, an AMS would include details on the timing and phasing of all tree works related to the proposed development.
